About About this site: I initially created this website at some point in 2022 as a site to host my Cydia repository, however it was hardly used and I only had a couple tweaks on there, one of them being my own which I created, iSign, a sort of AppSync Unified but for iPhoneOS 2 but without all the hassle of dealing with plists and permissions. Around 2024-ish I expanded the site and moved to altnet.online from my previous github pages domain. Since then the site has seen a few changes, but remaining mostly stagnant with the odd update every few months. As of writing this it is 30/06/26 and I finally have the time to work on this site so expect a lot of new additions to this site. On this page I will post changelogs for anything important and the statuses of my projects. My aim with this site is to provide protoweb with the largest collection of shareware/freeware/trialware (over 400+) available on the service, but not just that. but the actual websites that each piece of software came from. e.g. A Eudora mail client download from KeyScreen will not just be a TuCows server download, but you would actually be able to visit Eudora.com, so imagine that but for over 400-500+ sites and downloads. The project is daringly huge, ProtoWeb as a whole consists of around 560 published sites, so something like this would nearly double that count. I've finished manually crawling KeyScreen.com so I've only just started the actual process of restoring each download. (0%) 2) The CD Project (1996-2003) I own a vast collection of music CDs, the majority ranging from 1995-2005, most being numetal or alt rock. When the WWW was in its infancy, the web links that you would find on the back of cds or in booklets were a pivotal part in early "surfing" as they provided a way to discover new sites and get information about the bands you were listening to. I have around 100 CDs, the first band website has nearly been completed. Lostprophets.com (2001) is available on ProtoWeb and has songs from their debut album ready to stream via Real Player or WMP. (0%) 3) The MacFormat Project (1999-2001) Similar to CDs, magazines also played a pivotal role is discovering the early net. I own 25 UK MacFormat mags dating from November 1999 to September 2001, each one full of URLs to software and hardware pages and other things of the like. I couldn't estimate how many sites there would be but I would imagine it may be larger than KeyScreen.com, not only by the fact there may possibly be more URLs, but the fact that I would have to read every page of every mag to get every website. This could be anywhere from the same size as KeyScreen, to maybe 5x bigger by my estimates. (0%) 4) FIFA 2002 World Cup With the 2026 World Cup happening right now I thought why not restore a site for an early world cup that was live on the net. I could pick from 98 and 2002. While watching the highlights for the 2002 Brazil v Germany Finals I noticed www.fifaworldcup.com plastered around the pitch boundaries along with the sponsors, and that's that, I now had the perfect URL for a site I could restore for the World Cup, hopefully that website will be finished in time for the 2026 Finals. The site is being scraped as of writing, so while it's doing that I am working on www.beef-cake.com (2000), a South Park fansite, and www.topwallpapers.com (2001), a wallpaper site.
